Teaching

Overachiever that I am, I have a second job.  Yes, I am not only a midwife, but I am...drum roll please.......also an instructor for paramedic students!  What fun!  I am just teaching GYN and OB to the students, but that is quite enough.

Day one - GYN lecture.  I was given the materials to teach, along with power presentations for all of the material (GYN and OB).  I plan on totally revamping the GYN portion of the lecture for the future.  The power points are...dry.  Very. Very. Dry.

Day two - normal OB.  I ditched the power points, and used the paramedic book to refer to.  I added my own images and video clips of normal birth.  We also started to discuss some complications of pregnancy.

Day three - abnormal OB and birth scenarios.  More of my own images, some video clips, and patient care scenarios.  Assigning apgars with different pictures and scenarios given.

Day four - hands on scenarios with a sim!  Also some hands on practice with pelvis/baby models, and even some hands on with a real pregnant belly.

That was it...it was a ton of things to try to cover in just 3 days of lecture, plus one morning of sims and practicing hands on.  Fortunately, the students do get more hands on practicing with sims throughout their didactic program.

It's so cool that you're able to revamp this. I really like your blog, by the way!
