I understand the rationale for reading about different nursing theories. (Who knew there was so many???) However, I am now taking a break from reading about theory. It is so incredibly dry material to read for my Theory and Research class!
I read about Nightingale's Environmental Model and it's 13 canons. Ok, they make sense, and I can see how all of them apply for client health and wellness. Then I started reading Orem's Theory (self-care deficit nursing theory). I got through two pages and had to take a break. Gee, I only have this theory, plus five more to read about this week.
Then the real fun begins: we will be assigned (in groups) to write a paper on one of the theories. Oh boy. Can you sense my excitement?
I know this info applies to how to practice as an advanced practice nurse, but it is very, very, v.e.r.y. dry!!!
On the community health course, I need to hurry up and find a local preceptor for my observation clinical that starts at the end of September. ACK! I need to find a preceptor pronto, and the paperwork, plus a written assignment, is due in 2 weeks for that. Nothing like a time crunch right from the beginning of the school term, huh?

Ugh, that does NOT sound like fun. Perhaps they should rather have you talk about which theory you liked best or would practice, blah blah blah.
Typical nursing school hoops. I just love jumping through them myself. :)
I think the problem is that advanced practice nurses want to sound professional. I want to teach folks the material. That should be paramount.
I remember reading the nursing theorys too. Some of them were somewhat interesting. The only theory I really think abou these days is Maslows heiarchy of human needs. It makes perfect sense. However he is a psychologist and not a nurse theorist.
I sympathise with your emotional pain! I was not fond of community health nursing at all. I did my time at a homeless shelter. Not a bad gig.
Joy took the word right out of my brain!
ugh.
That's enough to keep me away from a master's program. Just kidding, but I've got to get through the ADN first.
Good luck with that group paper.
That's a double ugh!
In my last semester of school, we had to pick a theory to "teach" our classmates about (we were split into groups) and apply it to a case study. We used Ida Jean Orlando's theory- it is essentially the nursing process (adpie) and focuses on the nurse's role in understanding/addressing the pt.'s primary needs. i thought it was a great theory to use for a school project, and very applicable to practice, so i wanted to suggest it as a possible good choice for your paper! good luck!
Nursing theory and community health studies are the two things I dread most about pursuing any higher level nursing education.
Nursing theory is an excellent sleep aid!
What is Florence Nightingale's theory of nursing? I'm curious
I was going to suggest Ida Orlando Pellitier also...just finished a paper on her and found it fairly easy to write...lots of info out there and several good journal articles. I also agree with M'Lynn....nursing theory IS an excellent sleep aid! lol!!!
Ok...just saw the date on this post...you probably are finished with the assignment...lol!!
