Caller: I'm pregnant, and my baby daddy did "it" to me without a condom yesterday. Can I get pregnant again?
Nurse: Umm, you said you're already pregnant?
Caller: Yeah.
Nurse: So, you know that you're already pregnant?
Caller: Yeah, I'm pregnant.
Nurse: And you want to know if you can get pregnant again because you had sex without a condom? Hold on a minute.
(Places patient on hold and hysterical laughing ensues.)
(Puts on straight face again, and gets back on the phone.)
Nurse: No, you can't get pregnant again, when you're already pregnant.
Can we say that some patients REALLY need some sex education?????

Wow, I guess it's true that you'll never really hear it all. There's always another patient out there that proves that axiom true.
That was just depressing - that any woman of child bearing age could be so ignorant of basic reproductive knowledge. Is this what abstinence only education is getting us???

Hilarious! And scary! Because I have dealt with similiar calls...it's like the lady who called tech support about her computer monitor not working. He went through all these things to try and troubleshoot then finally asks if the monitor is plugged into the wall outlet...it wasn't.
All I can say is Wow!

This is very sad. An abused and ignorant young female is no laughing matter. Perhaps the triage nurse should have asked a few important questions like: Do you need help? Do you have medical care? She could have referred her to a battered womans shelter. I see nothing to laugh about here.
OMG. I feel so sorry for the baby in her womb right now.

How did you get that the woman is abused? Ignorant, yes, but ignorance does not always mean abused. Perhaps I am ignorant as well, but I don't see the connection or any correlation.

You should check out Yahoo! Answers. There's questions on there like "If my boyfriend gets me off with his finger can I get pregnant?" It's astounding.
I realize that this post seemed to make fun of this particular patient, but I did not want it to come across that way.
The person who talked to this patient on the phone has .... I should put it nicely...not the best professionalism. It was not me who talked to this patient on the phone.
I certainly would not have laughed at her ignorance, but I would have tried to educate her a little bit instead.
To "doc who cares" - how did you get that this patient was abused? She didn't indicate that in her phone call. The way she worded her having sex with her boyfriend is typical slang around here for sex. (He "did it" to me.)
